Indigenous Orthodox Christianity

Come and see the sacred tradition of Eastern Orthodox Christianity as it has been first revealed to, shaped by, and stewarded by the Indigenous peoples of these lands for the salvation and edification of the whole world.

He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”

Indigenous Orthodox Christianity refers to both the origin of the Eastern Orthodox Christian tradition in the Western Hemisphere that was received and maintained by the Indigenous peoples of Alaska, as well as its continuity across these lands as it has been faithfully and humbly stewarded by Indigenous Orthodox Christian communities over hundreds of years. Like our brothers and sisters-in-Christ in Antioch, Alexandria, Russia, Greece, (and more), the tradition of Indigenous Orthodox Christianity is an ongoing articulation and expression of how our Indigenous cultural ways of being, knowing, and believing join with Ancient Orthodox Christianity to shape a unique way of relating to and envisioning God for all. Indigenous Orthodoxy is an invitation for those that have tribal affiliations and cultural connections to the native ancestors of these lands and for non-native people to overcome the trauma of Western coloniality and find new ways of relating to the land, our neighbors, and God by walking this path together.

The mission of Indigenous Orthodox Christianity is to honor and share the sacred heritage and living witness of the Indigenous Orthodox Christian tradition throughout the Americas, the Caribbean, and the Pacific Islands, fostering fellowship, collaboration, education, and prayer among all who walk this path.

Our vision at Indigenous Orthodox Christianity is to nourish a spirit of community, liberation, and healing through the distinctively Indigenous expressions and receptions of the gospel of Jesus Christ as revealed through the Ancient Orthodox Christian Church.
